30 Safety and Training List
Due to variations in requirements across our many internship sites, LHSI does not coordinate or administer the training and certifications on this page. These are some suggestions on what interns have completed in the past. Interns should generally do the training required for employees at your site.
IRB Protocols
You may be required to add interns to existing IRB protocol. Some individual student projects may also need to go through IRB approval.
Cerner Access
IU Health requires students and staff to complete a brief REDCap survey to request Cerner access. Complete the REDCap form here. Before having them complete the survey, students will need to be assigned a Sponsor. Typically this individual is employed by IUH and is responsible for giving employees Cerner access and removing their access when it is no longer needed. Every research team is different – some may have their own Sponsor and some may use a person identified by their respected departments.
Suggested email text to send to students when they are applying for Cerner access:
[Intern],
You will need to complete this REDCap survey from IU Health to request access to Cerner. Here are some notes to help guide you through completing the survey:
- For type of Cerner research access you’ll need, you’ll select Research Staff
- For Cerner Research Needs, you’ll select Review patient records
- For IU Health Employee Sponsor Name and Email, you’ll just need to provide those for the student
Researcher ID Numbers
ORCID ID
NIH eRA ID – Contact the grants administrator or business manager in your department to request this ID for the intern.
Professional Liability Insurance
Interns at some hospital locations must carry professional liability insurance for the duration of the internship in addition to meeting whatever safety and health requirements you have other employees complete.
The insurance applies even if the student will not have direct patient contact. The insurance is at no cost to you or the student, but we do need to complete the paperwork prior to the start of the internship. The director coordinates the submission of this information.
