6 Deadlines and Assignments Policies
Deadlines matter. In a professional workplace, such as in your internship and future jobs, you will be expected to complete work well, on time, and in full. This can also mean leaving enough time for edits, revisions, and feedback prior to the actual deadline.
We are here to help you succeed in learning to balance your time and priorities to meet professional workplace expectations. To practice expectations for a professional workplace, we have policies and expectations about submitting LHSI assignments and attending program events. This will also ensure that the LHSI has enough time to leave you thoughtful, timely feedback on assignments and reflections.
Asking for more time
There may be times when you get behind or need more time to complete a task. In the workplace you are expected to give advanced notice if you think you might need a little more time. It is not ideal to ask for more time on every task. However, being aware that you need more time on some tasks or responsibilities and then communicating that to your supervisor shows teamwork and professionalism.
Expectations
- Prepare: Assignment deadlines are clearly noted on each assignment and can also be viewed in the syllabus section of Canvas. Modules are divided into months and we expect that you will review each module at the beginning of the month and mark down time on your calendar to complete the assignments or activities.
- Plan: Read each assignment for an estimate of how long to set aside for the assignment or anything else you may need to consider to best plan your time. Block off time on your calendar accordingly.
- Events: You will sign up for and attend all program events during the scheduled week of the event to help everyone stay on track. We know you are busy, so we share times and dates well in advance to help you plan. If the times available do not work for you, immediately contact the person in charge of the event to arrange a different time.
Policies to Ask for Extensions
- Extensions: If you realize that you might need an extension, you must tell your ambassador at least 48 hours prior to the deadline and give them the date you expect to have it completed. This date should be within a week of the actual deadline. We do not require a sick note or other documentation with the request. We trust that you are making the correct decision for your needs. If a non-internship issue is impacting your ability to meet deadlines, please contact us or see our list of the assistance available on campus.
- Program event rescheduling: It is your responsibility to contact the person in charge of the event to reschedule if you are unable to attend on the scheduled dates. You should reach out no later than the week before the event. All rescheduled times should be the same week as the other options so that you do not fall behind.
- Submissions: If you do not submit an assignment by the deadline, or ask for an extension and do not submit by the date of your extension, you will be marked as late on the assignment rubric. You will gain the points back by following the policy for late submissions below.
Policies for Late Submissions
If you are marked as late and had not asked for an extension, you will be required to:
-
- First late submission: Come to our office during drop-in hours or make an appointment with an ambassador to complete the assignment the week after the deadline. Having a structured, dedicated time to catch up can be helpful.
- Second late submission: Complete the assignment in our office the week after the deadline. Visit the Bepko Learning Center for drop-in success coaching to discuss strategies and resources on managing your time and priorities.
- Third late submission: Complete the assignment in our office the week after the deadline. Meet with Daniel to discuss strategies to submit assignments on time, and discuss if you have time for the internship and other responsibilities.
We will notify your supervisor if you’re late more than once on assignments. Interns with missing or late assignments who do not follow the late submissions policies may be dismissed from the program or may not receive the Record.
