1 Internship Expectations

The Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI) is an academic year hourly paid internship opportunity. Interns work approximately 10 hours per week and also occasionally clock in for program requirements.

LHSI has a strong reputation on campus because our interns leave the internship program prepared for next steps. To accomplish this, it’s not enough to just work some hours at an internship site for the school year. The true value of ANY hands-on experience is the time you put into understanding and being able to communicate to others what you learned and how you’ve grown.

Grad schools and employers are not impressed by LHSI being on your resume. They are impressed when you can explain how you used the experience to grow as a professional and think about your career choices. We will spend the year helping you reflect on your career preferences and options, explore who you are as a professional, and record your learning and growth throughout the year. Our activities and the ePortfolio are designed to help you get there.

Interns

By taking part in LHSI, you are agreeing to participate in our required activities and reflections. This includes:

  • Orientation workshop, midyear workshop, and other social events throughout the internship
  • Goal setting worksheet to set your own goals for the year
  • Fall and spring discussion boards to chat with other interns about what you’re learning about yourself and the professional workplace
  • Fall and spring events to meet with the LHSI ambassadors and get to know other interns casually
  • Fall site visit and spring check-in meeting to meet with the LHSI director and your supervisor to discuss your growth
  • ePortfolio to write about your career goals, your internship, and what you’re learning
  • Internship showcase to share everything you’ve learned at the end of the year

We will do periodic reviews of the required activities. If you are not completing the requirements in a timely manner, you may be asked to leave LHSI.

In addition to program requirements, at the internship location you will:

  • Be on time- If you will be absent or late; contact your supervisor as early as possible.
  • Meet with supervisor or someone at your internship site on a regular basis.
  • Inform supervisor of academic obligations in a timely manner and make a plan to work around them.
  • Check with supervisor on and adhere to the dress code and safety rules for the internship location.
  • Accurately record hours worked on the timesheet and follow all LHSI and IU human resources and payroll policies on work hours.
  • Follow any other policies and guidelines provided by the internship site.

Supervisors

As an LHSI Supervisor, you are expected to:

  • Fill out a Goals Form with the intern with appropriate learning outcomes and tasks to accomplish the goals, periodically revisit the goals and tasks
  • Fill out site contact form with intern to identify the best contact for timesheet issues, asking for more tasks, what to do when schedules change, etc.
  • Complete an intern assessment at mid-fall and at mid-spring and discuss with the intern
  • Attend the internship showcase event at the end of the academic year
  • Communicate with LHSI program staff about intern’s progress and any concerns
  • Approve timesheets and follow LHSI and IU HR policy on intern work hours

At the internship location, supervisors will:
