LHSI interns are hired as Indiana University temporary employees (HS) and are subject to state/federal labor laws as well as University Human Resources policies. Read the full policy on on the University Human Resources website.

The policies below are to maintain compliance with IU, state, and/or federal labor laws. Please read carefully and follow these policies.

LHSI Hours and Scheduling Policies

  1. Interns will, to the best of their ability, stay within the allocated maximum 20 hours per two week pay period. If you might go over or have recently gone over due to unforeseeable circumstances, notify the director of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program immediately. How you schedule the hours is up to the intern and supervisor (e.g. does not need to be an evenly divided 10 hours in week 1 and 10 hours in week 2).
  2. Interns must clock out for a minimum 30 minute lunch break if they are working more than six consecutive hours.
  3. Interns must be clocked in for all internship work. Interns are IU employees and may not volunteer extra time off the clock at the internship. If a supervisor regularly needs extra time, they may hire interns under their own department to clock in for the extra hours. If this policy is violated, the intern will be terminated and the site will be removed from LHSI.
  4. Interns holding more than one on-campus position are responsible for keeping track of overall hours and may not exceed 29 hours per week and 58 hours per pay period for all positions combined. For example, if you clock in for 10 hours in a week at your LHSI site, you have 19 hours left that week to clock in for other positions. The 29 hours per week is a strict policy.
  5. International students may not exceed 20 hours per week or 40 hours per pay period for all positions combined.
  6. All hours appear on one timesheet. Periodically review the overall timesheet to ensure you stay within the 29 hours per week.

Professional Development and Learning Opportunities

Learning is an important part of the internship experience. Interns may complete all LHSI assignments and requirements on the clock. Leave a note on your timesheet when you clock in for these activities to let your timesheet approver know what the hours were for. Interns may also do other professional development opportunities and trainings relevant to the internship site on the clock, with prior approval from the supervisor.
