32 Performance Improvement and Corrective Action
Interns are not just learning the content of your work, they’re learning how to work in a professional setting. You will need to set clear expectations to help guide interns.
Address issues while they’re small; problems can usually be fixed with a quick conversation to prevent future issues. Don’t hesitate to keep the director updated. No problem is too small and we’d rather prevent bigger issues through coaching or conversations at your site.
Not sure where to start? IU Human Resources has a resource for performance improvement and the director is always available to talk through what to do. Need something more serious? Talk to the director about corrective action resources if an intern may need to be terminated. We need to attempt to correct the issues before terminating an intern. It might also just be a bad fit and we can move the intern elsewhere. All terminations must go through the director and HR in the Division of Undergraduate Education.
