33 Professional development options during LHSI

This section contains resources for professional development that you can use now or later. Professionals are paid to keep up in the field, learn new skills, and gain valuable experience. We allow interns to engage in these activities on the clock with the supervisor’s permission. Professional development opportunities, trainings, and any scheduling changes should be discussed with the site ahead of time and interns should leave a note on the timesheet when clocking in for these activities.

These are helpful resources to use throughout the year, such as:

  • if the internship site doesn’t have a lot for interns to do during breaks and the intern still wants hours
  • to grow skills you’ve worked together to identify as necessary for the role or an area for further growth
  • when the intern occasionally finish tasks early and needs something to take up the rest of the shift

Get help with non-internship needs: This chapter contains campus resources for students needing assistance with things like access to food, safe housing, clothing, help with navigating campus systems, academic assistance, and health and wellness.

Grow as a student and professional: This chapter contains ideas for professional development on transferable skills, study skills, and work management skills. These are great options for virtual work or tasks that you can do (with permission) when you run out of work and need something to do.

Managing your time and money: Many interns struggle with managing time and money. Learn how to make the most of your budget and balance your responsibilities.

Career management and your future: Professional development can also mean taking the time to reflect on where you’ve been and explore where you’re going next.

Internship Skills and Trainings: Many of you are learning similar skills and technology to assist you while doing research, collecting data, and reviewing literature. Here are some training resources for you to improve on those skills.
