Before your internship, you need to…

  • Determine who will handle scheduling (this is usually the supervisor, but sometimes other staff/supervisors/coworkers handle intern schedules).
  • Ask about dress code, appropriate attire, or any safety requirements for your site.
  • Confirm who, when, and where (in person or video call) you should meet on your first day of work.
  • Work with your site to determine your schedule. Hours are flexible, but you can’t go over 20 hours in a 2 week pay period.

In your first two weeks, you will…

  • Get oriented to the site and start any necessary training.
  • Fill out the startup worksheet with your supervisor.
  • Practice asking for more work if you run out of tasks or trainings. View our trainings and resources suggestions to select training and learning opportunities with the help of your supervisor to do on the clock if things are off to a slow start and they don’t have a lot of work yet.
  • Try out and finalize your fall work schedule.
  • Discuss your goals with your supervisor and finalize and submit the Internship Goals Form.

Throughout the year, you will…

  • Tell your supervisor if there will be a change in your schedule or if you have breaks, midterms, or finals coming up.
  • Meet with your supervisor on a regular basis to review your work and give progress updates.
  • Attend mandatory LHSI events. These give you a chance to talk about and reflect on your internship.
  • Contact us or come to our office during drop-in hours when you have questions.
  • Complete site visits and a self-assessment in mid-fall and mid-spring. Your supervisor will also be filling out an evaluation of your work.
  • Complete ePortfolio assignments and discussion board assignments to reflect on what you’re learning and connect to the intern community. You can clock in extra for these assignments, they do not need to be completed on your 10 hours per week of internship time.
  • Participate in the Internship Showcase in April. You will present your internship work to peers, co-workers, supervisors, and your own guests. You will receive more details about this in early spring.
