If you have any questions or concerns regarding the program, please reach out to us in the LHSI office! We are here as a resource for you and want to see you succeed. Interns can reach the ambassadors through Canvas and supervisors are invited to contact the director with questions.

About

The Life-Health Sciences Internship Program connects IU Indianapolis life and health sciences undergraduates with paid internships on and near campus during the academic year.  Interns work for up to ten hours per week between August and May.  Workshops, panel discussions, and ePortfolio-related events are held on a regular basis.  An internship showcase is held at the end of the internship period for interns to display and discuss their work.

As of 2023-24 we’ve worked with over 1,000 interns since LHSI began in Spring 2007. Over 70% of LHSI alumni have gone on to graduate programs, medical school, dental school, optometry school, pharmacy school, and physical and occupational therapy programs. Many interns have been hired by their teams to continue working after the end of the official internship period.

Vision

To be a model program for high-impact practices through on-campus internships in life and health sciences fields that promote student success by engaging, retaining, and graduating IU Indianapolis undergraduates.

Mission

To inspire IU Indianapolis undergraduate student success through high-quality, structured internship experiences that encourage career exploration, skills development, and professional growth.

This is accomplished through on-campus experiences with faculty and staff in the IU Indianapolis graduate and professional programs as well as hospitals on and near campus.

Outcomes

By the end of the internship, interns will be able to:

  1. identify their emerging professional identity.
  2. demonstrate career-related skills gained from the internship and other experiential learning.
  3. explain and analyze their career goals.
  4. communicate about their experience in a way that is appropriate to the audience, purpose, and context.

Our Philosophy

We believe that you can succeed in a professional team environment. It is normal for this year to challenge you to grow and learn as a person and as a professional. Doing something new isn’t always easy or comfortable but we’re in this together. Come to us when you have questions, aren’t sure how to approach a situation at your site, or have any other circumstances affecting your time with us. The LHSI team has seen or experienced everything,  and we’re here to guide and support you! We are available through Canvas messages, through email, Zoom, and in Taylor Hall UC 3140 during the drop-in hours posted in Canvas. We will use the Student Appointment Scheduler for appointments outside of the drop-in hours.
