12 Prepare before the interview
After you start setting up interview times…
Confirm Location
- Virtual interviews: ask which platform you are using and confirm the timezone. You may not be in the same time zone as your interviewer.
- In person interviews: confirm location and directions and save their phone number in your phone in case you get lost and need to call for further directions.
Send Your Information
- Send a copy of your resume/CV, cover letter, and the fall schedule. You created this fall schedule as an assignment in Canvas. We recommend it when you do the final confirmation of time, date, and interview platform. Send this no later than 24 hours before the interview, preferably sooner.
- Respond to e-mails or phone calls, even if it’s just:
- “Thank you, I’ll talk to you on (date) at (time) via (phone/Zoom/Google Hangout/in person).”
What to Bring
- Virtual interviews: have your resume/CV and a draft of your fall schedule open. If screen share is available through your interview platform, you may be able to share it from your screen when they ask for it.
- In person: bring a copy of your resume/CV and a draft of your fall schedule.
Prepare
- Research the project and location beforehand and know what the site is looking for- this shows you’re serious about the position. The interview match email will have links to the relevant Handshake job postings. You will need to open the Handshake links in a private or incognito browser to prevent the Handshake app from opening. Descriptions are no longer visible on the app but should work in a browser if you’re not signed into your IU account.
- Prepare to discuss your academic/career goals and how that location fits with those goals. You started this in the application short answer questions and it should be included in your cover letter content, review that now!
- It’s helpful to have a copy of your cover letter with you to reference as you answer questions.
- Check out this video from IU Indianapolis Academic and Career Development on how to prepare before the interview.
Bring
- Prepare a short list of questions or information you want to know about the sites or supervisor(s). We will do an activity in the workshop to help you come up with questions. The following chapter also covers a list of questions you can choose from as a starting point.
- Have a draft of your fall schedule readily available (see Canvas assignment). They want to see you’re prepared to make this a priority. Remember that while hours might be flexible, most locations expect you to work 8-10 hours per week on weekdays between 8am and 5pm. Review the descriptions for any specifics, such as availability they want or length of time blocks that are useful to have (i.e. 3 hours at least 2 days a week). Prepare to show when you’d fit this into your schedule.
