19 Interview Timeline
Application
Our application is typically due the Wednesday before IU Indianapolis spring break. We have a team of reviewers that score application short answer responses and then we decide who to move to interviews.
Pre-interview
Students must attend a pre-interview workshop with our ambassadors to review expectations for the process and help connect them with other career resources on campus, such as mock interviews and additional resume assistance if they did not previously get that help.
Our office does not have the capacity to do career services activities for students. It is our responsibility to connect them to the services in their school to begin a relationship with career services early. Many have already worked with us for help signing up for a resume review with the correct office and can just return to the same place for interview help. All students have access to mock interviews or interview workshops through their academic school or the Office of Student Employment and should be using this service to be successful and confident in interviews.
The director makes interview matches based on the locations students identified on the application. They make their selections using the descriptions you submitted to us that were then posted on Handshake. Interview matches typically go out the first or second week of April.
Meet with you
We expect students to send you a brief email within a week of receiving match information to begin the process of scheduling interviews. They have received proper titles to use for you (not first names). After that initial communication and before the interview, students should provide:
-
- Information on why they selected your site, the basic skills they already have, and how this connects to their career goals. These are all short answer responses on the application and they have received feedback to implement before sending to you. This is an attached cover letter.
- Resume/CV attachment (students typically have a resume format).
- Draft of a fall schedule attachment (they may not have finalized by that point, but should have an idea).
You have the rest of April and the first week of May to complete interviews. You will receive a ranking link to provide feedback and your preferences. You must meet with all assigned students to remain eligible for matching. If you don’t hear from a student after a week from the interview match email or have trouble communicating to set up an interview, contact us immediately.
Matching
The director reviews spring grades in mid-May and makes final matches based on feedback from you and the students at that time. Interns begin working at the start of fall semester, typically in early September, and continue through the beginning of May.
