15 During the Interview

Pep Talk

  • It’s ok to be nervous. Smile if you want. Be friendly, curious, and polite.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions! This will help you determine if the site is a good fit for you. You may love the research or work, but if the team or supervisor is not a good fit, you will not be happy.

Advice

  • You will be working with people with advanced degrees and many years of experience in their own work. Be confident in your knowledge and abilities, but don’t act like you know everything about their work. You don’t.
  • Put forth your best efforts in the interviews because many of our supervisors have been involved in the process for a long time and can easily tell when you’ve prepared or not. Make sure you are well-versed with the duties/opportunities of the site so the supervisors know you are genuinely interested and have done your research!
  • Don’t lie, burn bridges, or badmouth previous supervisors, positions, or other sites you’ve interviewed with. It is unprofessional and the supervisors DO talk to one another about your behavior in the interview.
  • Review this video from IU Indianapolis Academic and Career Development on what to do during the interview.

Before you end the meeting, thank them for taking the time to meet with you. If possible, get the names of anyone else in the meeting to use for thank you emails later.
