3 Overview of the Matching/Interview Process
Interview Matching and Assignments
Applicants are assigned 2-3 interviews by the LHSI director. They will be matched with at least 2 of the preferences listed on their application to interview. In some cases, additional sites not originally listed on Handshake may be matched with applicants for interviews based on their unique interests, or sites you listed on the application may have adjusted plans for the fall and will no longer be able to host.
Interview matches will be sent the first or second week of April if everyone has completed the required assignments and attended a pre-interview workshop. Applicants are responsible for sending the first email to each assigned interview site no later than one week after the matches are sent. This is to start introductions and share availability for interviews. You don’t need to have interviewed by then, but the sites are waiting for and expecting a prompt first message to get started on scheduling. Prompt communications are an expectation throughout the interview process and as an intern as well. Prior to the scheduled interview, applicants should send a resume, cover letter, and fall schedule to the internship site.
Our job is to help students and internship sites succeed. Review the tips and hints in this handbook to get ready. Please keep in mind as you are preparing to interview that you are a representative of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program and your academic department. We have high expectations for you and we know you can meet them.
Applicants will be removed from the interview process if they do not send the first message to each interview site within one week of matches being sent out.
Timeline:
- Interviews: April and early May
- Final site matches: mid to late May
- Hiring: late August, start work the second week of classes
- Orientation: mid September
- The internship: early September through early May
- Internship Showcase: April
NOTE: Interviews are no guarantee of acceptance into the LHSI program. An official invitation to join the program will be extended after successful interviews with potential internship sites (resulting in a placement match) and a review of spring grades in May for continued eligibility. More students interview than we can take so please review this handbook carefully, visit career services for a mock interview, and do your best.
