When and why should I meet with a career advisor?

Recommended – at least once a semester

A good guideline is to check in with a career advisor at least once a semester, just to make sure you’re staying on track with your career goals.

Other times: However, you may also decide to meet with someone more frequently when you’re actively seeking career opportunities and engaged in the recruiting process. You can meet with a career services staff member at any point during the year, and as often as you’d like!

What can I talk about in a meeting?

  • How to conduct informational interviews with industry professionals
  • Edit your resume and cover letters
  • Prepare for the fall and / or spring career fair
  • Practice your elevator pitch (how to introduce yourself in a networking setting)
  • Develop a plan to search for internships and full-time jobs
  • Prepare for behavioral, technical, and case interviews
  • Review your LinkedIn profile
  • Navigate job offers and negotiations
  • Explore graduate school options / help with application materials
