26 Ancient Revelry

The stars of outer space are now aligned.
For Gods and men alike, the wine is sweet.
They all are to the great decree resigned.
At banquets holy prophets to unwind
Are drinking toasts to make well-known their fleet.
Outdoors, the shepherds milk the precious teat.
To dust all care and strife is now consigned.
In poesy’s books, the muse this will portray:
How scholars came and toped all from the glass.
One sage is even eating a kumquat!
The memory sputters within an ashtray.
Always to haunt, to menace, and harass
The thoughts and dreams of man’s last hope and shot.
