Endocrinology
Faculty endocrinologists use the latest medical advances to treat disorders of the endocrine (hormonal) system, including diabetes, thyroid disease and cancer, osteoporosis, and adrenal and pituitary conditions. Services offered include comprehensive diabetes education, individual consultations, diabetes prevention programs, insulin initiation and regulation, insulin pump education, gestational diabetes education, diabetes counseling and medical nutrition therapy.
Under division chief Michael Econs, MD, the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism demonstrates excellence in teaching, patient care, and research. Medical school and resident education includes the Endocrinology section in the Foundation of Clinical Practice course and active endocrine rotations for students and residents. Residents taking the endocrine elective, as well as the women’s health elective, rotate through our many clinics.
Endocrinology faculty and staff are actively engaged in research across the endocrinology spectrum as well as partnering with researchers from a variety of other specialties.
The division offers a two-year ACGME-accredited fellowship training for physicians who completed a residency in internal medicine at an ACGME-accredited program. The fellowship prepares physicians for careers in academic medicine or clinical practice by providing a firm grounding in the fundamentals of endocrinology and metabolism. The program offers clinical training, both in the outpatient and inpatient venues, as well as outstanding research mentorship by nationally known research faculty.

IU endocrinologists receive esteemed JDRF awards for contributions to type 1 diabetes research
At the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases (CDMD), several dedicated teams of scientists and physicians are devoted to improving the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) through groundbreaking research. Recently, two faculty members were recognized for their significant contributions to the field by the leading global research and advocacy organization for the disease, JDRF.
Linda DiMeglio, MPH, MD, was announced as the co-recipient of the 2023 George Eisenbarth Award for Type 1 Diabetes Prevention, and Viral Shah, MD, received the 2023 Mary Tyler Moore and S. Robert Levine, MD, Excellence in Clinical Research Award.
In recognition of her leadership in type 1 diabetes prevention research, DiMeglio, who serves as the Edwin Letzter Professor of Pediatrics at IU School of Medicine and division chief of pediatric endocrinology and diabetology at Riley Children’s Health, received the award named after George Eisenbarth, MD, PhD. According to JDRF, Eisenbarth was an esteemed researcher who, “provided the foundation for predicting T1D and identifying novel approaches toward prevention and cures.” Read More.
IU School of Medicine to prepare more endocrinologists with the Endocrine Society’s Medical School Engagement Program
IU School of Medicine has been selected as an inaugural participant in the Endocrine Society’s Medical School Engagement Program, intended to encourage more medical students to pursue careers in endocrinology. This award will help prepare more specialists in a field currently experiencing a shortage of specialists necessary to manage the increasing number of individuals affected by endocrine-related conditions.
IU School of Medicine joins nine other colleges and universities in participating during the inaugural year of the Endocrine Society’s Medical School Engagement Program. These institutions will receive resources and opportunities aimed at demonstrating to students the dynamic aspects of endocrinology in clinical and academic settings. Initiatives include:
- Providing funding to support faculty-led Endocrinology Interest Groups for medical students highlighting the best of endocrine practice and research.
- Supporting two Excellence in Endocrinology awards at each institution.
- Funding attendance at the Society’s annual meeting, ENDO, for students from each participant medical school to participate in Endocrine Mentor Day and meet with Society leaders.
