The Department of Medicine takes great pride in its ability to provide a harmonized education experience for all its learners, regardless of where in the state they choose to study.

The department offers an extensive selection of educational opportunities within its 10 subspecialty divisions. From the first year of medical school through post-graduate fellowship training, all learners receive exceptional training from dedicated faculty in all areas of clinical internal medicine and research.

The department offers MD training to medical students beginning in the first year curriculum. Opportunities include early clinical exposure through clerkships and externships as well as a variety of elective courses. Three — soon to be four — residency programs are offered through the department; and more than a dozen fellowship programs within the divisions allow physicians to hone skills across several specialties, from the conventional areas of internal medicine to emerging areas, such as informatics.

Clerkship

The Internal Medicine Clerkship is often the most highly rated by senior IU School of Medicine medical students. It consists of an eight-week rotation with opportunities for community-based experience as well as inpatient experiences at diverse facilities, including a county hospital, a Veterans Administration hospital, and tertiary referral and community hospitals.

The program is ranked in the 58th percentile by National Board of Medical Examiners, and out performed its own benchmarks on key categories of the graduate questionnaire in 2024.

Residency

Residency training within the Department of Medicine at IU School of Medicine encompasses every aspect of internal medicine and offers various tracks to best suit the trainee’s needs. We have four outstanding programs: the Indianapolis Internal Medicine Residency, the combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency (also in Indianapolis), the Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency and the Internal Medicine Residency in Muncie.

This department is nationally and internationally renowned for its contributions to medicine. Within this rich clinical environment, our internal medicine residency programs offer considerable flexibility and choice in training to help each individual achieve specific career goals. Trainees interested in becoming physician scientists can apply for the board-approved research pathway.
