Faculty Development
IU School of Medicine’s statewide, regional campus system sets it apart from other medical schools in the United States. With nine campuses located in some of Indiana’s most livable cities, IU School of Medicine offers a wide variety of working and learning environments to meet different styles, needs and interests.
The educational mission of the Department of Medicine would be ineffective if not for the statewide network of master clinicians and renowned researchers that contribute to the teaching of our medical students, residents and fellows.
The department has 1,966 faculty members serving on the school’s nine campuses, including 818 volunteers.
Tierney named Distinguished Professor of Medicine

Bill Tierney, MD, was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Medicine. A Distinguished Professor is the most prestigious appointment offered by Indiana University to honor faculty whose outstanding scholarship, artistic or literary distinction, or other achievements have won significant recognition by peers.
Tierney’s expertise and tireless work ethic as a physician-scientist, informatician, educator, mentor and passionate advocate for vulnerable populations have shifted the paradigm for patient care and health services in the nation and across the globe.
Tierney is internationally known as the founding director of informatics and research for AMPATH, the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare, a 30+-year collaboration of more than 20 North American universities with Moi University in Kenya. He led the team that developed sub-Saharan Africa’s first ambulatory electronic health record, which grew into one of the world’s most widely adopted platforms implemented in more than 50 countries. He has published more than 600 articles and 15 books and received over $60 million in grants.
He has supported collaborators around the world across three areas of cross-disciplinary translational research expertise: internal medicine, biomedical informatics and population health. An elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, he has pioneered ground-breaking multidisciplinary research and scholarly activity and played a pivotal role in the development of infrastructures that promote health care informatics and population health.
Bosslet earns Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Award for Clinical Faculty

Mentoring among faculty at IU School of Medicine is crucial in sustaining a vital faculty community, promoting faculty development and increasing faculty retention. The Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Awards at IU School of Medicine underscore the commitment to endorse mentoring within our faculty. The purpose is to recognize the outstanding mentoring efforts of one clinical and one basic science faculty member each year who actively mentor other faculty members. These prestigious awards acknowledge the time and dedication faculty mentors devote to fostering colleagues’ career development and in research, education, service and clinical practice. In addition, these awards allow IU School of Medicine to honor and celebrate the valuable efforts of faculty mentors who embody the spirit of mentoring.
Gabriel Bosslet, MD, an Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development and a Professor of Clinical Medicine, was presented the 2024 mentoring award for clinical faculty.
Bosslet is part Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep and Occupational Medicine.
