Section 10
Research Events
A critical part of every music graduate student’s education is the opportunity to become a part of the music education research community both at Indiana University and in the broader field of music education. In preparation for entrance into the field of higher education, graduate students must seek every opportunity to attend and present at research colloquia and conferences both on and off campus. It is expected that serious master’s and doctoral students in music education will become active members of the research community. The Music Education Research Colloquium (MERC), MUS- E650, is a required component for doctoral students during their semesters in residence; MME (and MS) students are strongly encouraged to attend the MERCs.

Other dates are available for graduate students to present their research or for faculty to provide lectures or lead discussions on special topics.
Jean Sinor Memorial Lecture Series
The Jean Sinor Memorial Lecture Series was established to honor the memory of Eugenia (Jean) Sinor (1946-1999), former Professor of Music Education and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Jacobs School of Music. The lecture series was made possible by a significant gift from Denis Sinor, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, in memory of his late wife, Jean. Through a matching component of his gift, Jean’s admirers and students world-wide have contributed to the endowment for the Jean Sinor Memorial Lecture Series. Beginning in the spring of 2007, world renowned music education scholars have been invited to Bloomington to present a scholarly lecture which is open to the wider university community, guest teach classes, and meet with graduate students about their research. Past guests include:
Wendy Sims, 2007
Patricia Shehan Campbell, 2008
Robert A. Duke, 2009
Lucy Green, 2010
Scott C. Shuler, 2011
Festschrift in Honor of Charles P. Schmidt, 2012

Headquartered in the Midwest, the Big Ten Academic Alliance (formerly Committee on Institutional Cooperation, CIC) is the nation’s preeminent model for effective collaboration among research universities. For more than half a century, these world-class research institutions have advanced their academic missions, generated unique opportunities for students and faculty, and served the common good by sharing expertise, leveraging campus resources, and collaborating on innovative programs. Governed and funded by the Provosts of the member universities, BTAA mandates are coordinated by a staff from its Champaign, Illinois headquarters. The annual BTAA Music Education Conference is traditionally held in October and is hosted on a rotating basis by member institutions with music education departments. A major objective of the BTAA Music Education Conference is to bring together faculty and doctoral students to discuss common concerns and to share scholarship. A research poster session for doctoral students is a part of each BTAA Conference.
The BTAA Music Education Research Conference for 2024 is scheduled to occur October 9-11 at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Stay tuned for details regarding the conference.
A listserv has been established to distribute announcements; send an email from your IU email account to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UNL.EDU. Do not include a subject and have as the only message: SUBSCRIBE CIC-MUSICEDUC (do not include a signature or other information in the message). Doctoral students should feel free to direct any questions to faculty members.
