Supporting the Jetstream2 supercomputer

The Jetstream2 supercomputer at the IU data center
The Jetstream2 supercomputer is just one of IU’s high performance computing tools that use our network for data transfer.

Our Network Facilities group oversees the reliable delivery of power and cooling for IU’s IT needs. In 2021, Facilities provided the necessary power and cooling infrastructure to support the installation of the new Jetstream2 research computing system. The 8 petaFLOPS, cloud computing system provides virtual supercomputing power to researchers in a range of fields, including AI, social sciences, and COVID-19 research.

Upgrading the Data Center

We are always looking to deliver new levels of scalability and performance, and so in 2021 we designed and deployed a complete replacement for the data center spine switching architecture. The new spines provide both the bandwidth needed for today with high-density 100Gb capacity as well as a modular and scalable foundation to meet the needs of the future.

Expanding the wireless network

As wireless needs grow, so does our capacity.

Our students, faculty, and staff require an ever-expanding wireless network—and we are meeting this need. In 2021, the number of IU Bloomington wireless access points increased nearly 6 percent, from 9,719 to 10,284. At our Indianapolis campus, we saw similar numbers: wireless access points increased nearly 7 percent, from 2,569 to 2,746.
