Ways to Use the Strategy Compendium
Chapter 1: Full Strategy List (Alphabetical)
The alphabetized table supplies information for various evidence-based prevention strategies. The table includes the name of a strategy, along with its respective target populations, domains, links to registries, and information on research or peer review. Programs, practices, and policies are being added and removed from registries and given peer reviews on an ongoing basis. For this reason, we cannot use the list as the total sum of available programs, practices, and policies.
Chapter 2: Effectiveness Tier Levels
This chapter assigns a tier level of effectiveness to each strategy. The tier levels of effectiveness, developed using criteria from various national evidence-based registries, are used to denote how much empirical evidence exists supporting a strategy. There are three tiers, listed from most substantial evidence basis to least.
Chapter 3: Strategy by Prioritized Population
This chapter sorts strategies by which focus population they are designed to reach. This could be age, school level, or in some cases, culture and ethnicity. Some strategies will be listed multiple times, as they reach multiple focus populations.
Chapter 4: Strategy by Domain and Contributing Factors
This chapter sorts strategies by the contributing factors they are designed to focus upon. Contributing factors, or risk and protective factors, are the internal and external influences by which people start a behavior.
This chapter sorts strategies by their Institution of Medicine (IOM) category. The Institution of Medicine categorizes prevention strategies into three main delivery methods: universal, selective, and indicated.
Chapter 6: Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Core Strategies
This chapter sorts strategies by which CSAP Core Strategy category they fall into. The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention categorizes prevention strategies by the services they provide. There are six categories: education, information dissemination, alternatives, community-based processes, problem identification and referral, and environmental approaches.
Chapter 7: Behaviors Beyond Substance Misuse
While the prevention practices, programs and strategies in this compendium are related to substance use, it is important to know if these strategies have also been shown effective with other behaviors. This chapter lists those strategies that have evidence of effectiveness with other behaviors such as bullying, violence/aggression, prosocial skills, and more.
