This is the Life

6 In your hair, the braids

dedicated to the Amish women that move silently among us

In your hair, the braids, hidden by white caps,
The muted fabric to set you apart
I wonder if you see yourself as art
Or merely hoping, wishing that perhaps
Your world of piety would just collapse.
Beauty, strength, and still. When calls the heart
To a higher calling, God’s will imparts
To you the way of your faith. No mishaps
Are seen because of sure silence. The stares
Of others have become a badge of strength.
Embracing a life of simplicity.
Yet save the simplicity of your prayers.
Your hidden lives protected at all lengths,
Remains a sign, your duplicity.
