25 Underwater

When you said I love you for the first time
I was listening
underwater muffled sound waves
barely reaching
blood whooshed through my ears
drowning my senses
My ears and mind could barely register
that moment
my body knew it needed protection
from empty words.
Your love was draining all-consuming
Your promises dissolved like sugar-coated crystals
It’s us against the world I’ll never leave
your greatest hits and they kept playing for years.
I never liked your taste in music.
And now what a sad state of affairs
Your affairs, specifically. Turns out the danger was real
You always wanted more than my heart could give.
