13 Still Without Him

Among the treasures in her attic
stood a mirror both old and new.
Its gilded frame held the window
to a life she no longer recognized,
And in her reflection, a countenance aged
by circumstance
Carved by the wounds of her past,
even now threatening in the shadows.
In the looming darkness
a tiny bit of light glittered from her diamond ring.
A sudden memory seared into view.
The happiest day turned saddest
too quickly.
Finding love and losing it
nearly all in the same breath.

No one can predict these things
only mourn them.
A cry threatens to escape
as she remembers his final goodbye,
Words sobbed in apology
as though it were his fault.
But matters of the heart
are never that simple.
Neither is letting them go
Turning from the mirror
she faces her new reality
Still without him.
