14 Next Time

Muscle memory is a strange thing
Especially when muscles choose what to remember
They whisper, “Ah! That’s the way!”
Then you find yourself colliding with strangers
Tripping on your own feet as you realize
What your muscles remember is not quite what your brain does.
The body remembers what it’s like to dance,
feels the call of the music
And when the rhythm takes the lead, there is nothing to do but follow.
A freestyle unlike any other begins,
and your heart takes flight
The eight counts melt into a shuffle ball change–
With a four-count turn and a two-count hold,
The music swells, then fades away
you linger a bit longer
Still swaying to the beat that’s now pounding in your heart.
The body will remember this feeling and keep it close,
until next time.
