28 Trail Observations

Trees thrashing in the wind
not just the gentle whisper they’re known for.
Wooden benches placed strategically
in shady nooks off the trail–
Smooth to the touch
this is popular spot is
all mine today.
Initials carved into a bench,
some sort of modern hieroglyphics:
RLP + AMT
FE
The occasional bird in the lull.
Path flattened through bushes
meets a little free library nook.
Green and brown as far as the eye can see
Blue shiny mylar balloon
defeated in the underbrush
so out of place amidst the surroundings.
Air thick and heavy with anticipated rain
The sky with its crazy split-screen
dark and menacing to the left,
sun and white clouds to the right.
Faint perfume of an unidentified flowering bush
Distance truck sounds remind me
I’m still in the city.
