Melody

The melody of a song is the most memorable component. It is a mixture of pitch and rhythm and can be coined as a musical phrase. When thinking about pitch, the melody typically fluctuates depending on the rhythm of the song, but the comprised notes are normally at a higher pitch than the other notes being used. This is because the melody is meant to be distinctive and unique from the other components. I like to envision the melody of a song as the message or main emotion that is demonstrated.

When writing your song, starting with the melody is typically the easiest route. This is because of the fact that it is the lead statement in a song, and you will be able to add your other elements and components around your melody. When looking at a basic format of a song, the instruments that are used is drums, guitar, bass, piano, and vocals. Typically, the melody takes place in either the vocals, guitar, or piano due to the higher pitch of these instruments. They are easiest to decipher between and will leave more of an influence in the listener’s head.

In order to compose the melody, you can play around with different notes that you like or think are interesting. You can try this out on piano, guitar, or by using your voice if you have already come up with some lyrics. I find it helpful to put on a metronome, which is a device that signals the tempo, and comprise these notes in a multitude of different rhythms and pitches until I find a sound that I like. The melody allows you to express your emotions and it is the driving force of your song!
