Lore Overview: Blood Angels

Hailing from their home world of Baal, the Blood Angels were one of the 20 First Founding legions of Space Marines. They are one of the most celebrated chapters in the Imperium, known by billions for their success and ruthlessness in battle. The Blood Angels live up to their name with a gothic and vampiric aesthetic shown in their miniatures and lore.[1]

Their Primarch is the late Sanguinius. Sanguinius was a tall, blonde, conventionally attractive with great white angel wings on his back. He was beloved by his chapter members, and when he died at the hands of Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit, the Blood Angels felt his pain. Literally.[2]

The cursed gene seed of the Blood Angels forced them to share a portion of Sanguinius’s pain in his final moments. They are tormented with visions of their Primarch’s last moments in battle with Horus. The older a Blood Angel gets, the worse these visions become, until they fall into madness.[3]

Playstyle Overview: Blood Angels

The Blood Angels are known for two things: their bloodlust and their speed. They are fans of charging straight into their enemies and hitting hard once they get there. Blood Angels have a plethora of movement abilities that allow them to traverse the battlefield with ease and grant them extra damage and defense when they do so.[4]

Let’s take a look at the Blood Angel specific abilities and doctrines found in their Codex Supplement. [5]

Doctrine: Savage Echoes

  • While the Assault Doctrine is active, each time this unit fights, if it made a charge move, was charged, or performed a Heroic Intervention this turn, then unit that fight is resolved, add +1 to the Attacks characteristic models of this unit.

Chapter Tactics: Red Thirst

  • Add +1 to advance rolls and charge rolls for units with this tactic.
  • Each time a model with this tactic makes a melee attack, if that model’s unit made a charge move, was charged, or performed a Heroic Intervention this turn, add +1 to that attack’s wound roll
