7 Health Insurance
All international students are required to have adequate health and accident insurance. The IU Office of International Services has negotiated a group plan and will enroll all students in the plan at a cost of approximately $1,900 each per year. This will provide coverage from August 1 of the current year through July 31 of the following year. It may be possible to ‘waive out’ or withdraw from this plan. The Office of International Services is responsible for determining on a case-by-case basis whether a student’s non-IU insurance coverage is adequate. Minimum adequate insurance coverage offers compensation of at least $100,000 U.S. dollars per illness or accident; maternity (pregnancy, pre-natal and birth) benefits corresponding to benefits for illnesses; U.S.
$50,000 for medical evacuation, and U.S. $25,000 for repatriation of remains to the home country in case of death. You can find more information at ois.iu.edu/living-in-the-us/health/index.html.
Academic Year students with continuing insurance coverage can submit an Insurance Waiver Request within 10 days of the start of classes. Submit the form and required insurance documentation through Atlas. For more information, see: ois.iu.edu/living-in-the-us/health/insurance/student-insurance/exemptions.html.
Students with dual citizenship are NOT covered under this policy. You must use your family policy or purchase your own policy. One option you may wish to consider is the regular IU student health insurance plan (hr.iu.edu/benefits/students.html).
You can find information about requesting a waiver by contacting ois@iu.edu.
