  • Gracie Kaine (‘23) was the recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa Scholastic award of Kentuckiana. The selection criteria included academic merit, university involvement, honors and awards, evidence of well-rounded scholarship, and graduate-school plans.
  • The IU Southeast Theatre Department presented, Thereafter, Apr 14 – Apr 16 a world premiere production written by Daniel Barrett (‘23) and was directed by recent IU Southeast graduate, Nykayla Whitt (‘22).
  • On Saturday April 1, three of the members of the editorial staff and Professor Tom O’Neal travelled to Indianapolis to attend the annual Indiana Collegiate Press Association Conference, of which the IU Southeast Review is a member. They attended various breakout sessions ranging from literary editing to increasing the diversity of your school’s literary magazine.

    An awards luncheon followed the conference. Of the many university literary magazines competing from across the state, Ellis Sigafoos’ (‘23) short story, “It Dies in The Light” claimed third place in the best short fiction category. Second place in the best photo published in a literary magazine category went to IU Southeast’s Fine Art student Gabriel Robinson’s photo, “Flower Picking.” Associate Editor Abby Schnell is pictured displaying Gabriel’s certificate. Rian and Abby will remain on the editorial staff for the next magazine cycle.

  • A t-shirt design contest, open to all A&L students was held in April. The first-place winner Riley Hobson was awarded a $300 scholarship and design for the T-shirt. Stop by the Dean’s Office to get the newly designed T-shirt.
  • The Dirt Bags Art Club held their annual fundraising sale raising money to attend the annual conference of the National Council on the Education of Ceramic Art (NCECA) in Cincinnati NCECA promotes and improves the ceramic arts through education, community-building, research and creative inspiration, offering programs, events, and publications to support the field and communities in which we work.
  • The first BFA senior thesis exhibition “Stagnant Echoes – Displays of the Past, Present, and Future” was held March 9 – March 23 in the Barr Gallery. It featured the work of digital art students Olivia Arnold (‘23), Josiah Pohl (‘23), and Jazz Strope (‘23).

  • Sabrina Yost (‘23), exhibited her photography in the Mezzanine of the Ogle Center in April. Sabrina’s work aims to illuminate the beauty and raw emotion of animals. When shooting her subject, she strives to capture authentic images providing different values of light and shape to help personalize the subjects’ story. Her hope is for her work to inspire others to promote a lens of discovering emotion through the use of black and white photography.

  • “Residual; Narratives of the Past” was the final BFA exhibition of the spring semester featuring Griffin Morris (‘23), Mandi Mudd, and Olivia Curell (‘23). It was held at the Barr Gallery April 27 – May 8.

  • The Dirt Bags Art Club Empty Bowls held its fundraiser for the South Eats Pantry during IU Day on April 19. IU Day is a celebration of our community and an opportunity to give back to it. The students and faculty from the IU Southeast ceramics area did just that, making over 100 handmade ceramic bowls to sell in support of the South Eats Pantry’s effort to support students in need of food or personal care items on IU Southeast’s campus. 100% of the proceeds support the Grenadier Grab n’ Go.
  • The Fine Arts program and the IU Southeast Library collaborated on a new exhibition Spring 2023 Zine Show. The exhibition, held in the Library Gallery, featured illustrated self-publications by Fine Arts students.
  • In early June 2023, Lecturer of Graphic Design, Leslie Doyle, took a select group of students on an annual excursion to the HOW Design Live Conference at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. The trip, supported by excursion funding provided by the interim EVCAA, Dr. Uric Dufrene, allowed students to listen to well-known keynote speakers, attend breakout sessions and hands-on workshops. Two of the more exciting sessions were by Pepsi and Jell-O, who gave attendees a sneak peek into their upcoming rebranding. Students were also able to see world-renowned designers on stage, such as Paula Scher, Michael Bierut, Emily Oberman and the infamous Stefan Sagmeister, who revolutionized Graphic Design. The graphic design faculty are excited to continue offering this opportunity to students. Be on the lookout for where they go next year!
  • IU Southeast Music Students in Action – As part of the Non-Traditional Ensemble at IU Southeast, Lecturer, Tim Haertel provided students an opportunity to record in a real studio setting at TNT Productions in Louisville. In collaboration with the MUS-A270 and A470 courses, the students were able to apply their skills in the real world – this included playing, singing, recording, and producing.  More reasons IU Southeast students are amazing!
  • Student, Luke Spine won the 2023 Music History Research Award for his paper entitled, “From Beeps to Studio Recordings: A History of the Technology Behind Video Game Audio.” The ad-hoc committee who read his paper was impressed with the quality of research and writing, and especially the use of audio musical excerpts from some of the most important video games of the twentieth century. The award was created by Dr. Ann Glaser Niren to honor those students who go above and beyond in their semester research paper, showing original research or a unique angle on a particular topic. Congratulations to Luke!
  • Kasmira Frazier (‘23) performed a senior contrabass recital on April 16 as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree.
  • The IU Southeast Music Department and Honors Program co-hosted a student showcase of vocal performers, musicians, performing arts, and everything in between in front of a live audience on March 22.

  • Congratulations to the May graduates from the School of Arts and Letters! The graduation commencement ceremony was held on Monday, May 8. The event was held at the Caesars Foundation of Floyd County Amphitheater even after an EF1 tornado touched down on campus the day before!
