Building Critical Development Research Skills Through Co-learning and Practice

Roberta Hawkins

Chapter Summary

This chapter provides suggestions for course design focused on co-learning and practice based on the author’s experiences teaching a MA level GDS course, Research and Analysis in a Development Context. The course is designed in a manner that avoids some of the common pitfalls of traditional graduate seminar classes, namely: competition and perfectionism. The chapter highlights the benefits of a flipped-classroom course design where students collaboratively work through course content. A detailed lesson plan is provided as an example.
