1 “It’s OK To Feel Anxious” with Greta

At the beginning of August, if you had asked me how I felt about college, I probably would have said something along the lines of, I’m scared, stressed, excited, anxious, unsure, happy, and nervous all in one. If I were asked the question today, I would say I’m content and happy. College is an experience that is different for everyone, but at the same time, as freshmen, we are all starting a new chapter in our lives, and everything is new for everyone. Having this exploratory class during my first semester has helped me realize and understand so many values and tools I can use throughout my college experience.

For one, I wish I had known before coming to college that we are all new and it’s okay to be anxious and nervous. Knowing this, I feel like I missed out on some events that could have helped me meet even more friends, so for my friendship advice, I would say to go to events, be bold, reach out to others, and make those friendships. Even though the first couple of weeks of college can just be small talk, sometimes that small talk can lead to good friendships in the long run.

My favorite spot on campus would be the IMU. There is always something going on there, and they have food, study rooms, Starbucks, and more. When I go to the IMU, I tend to lock in and get all my homework done for my classes.

Figuring out my major was my biggest issue this semester. I was so caught up in how I could make the most money rather than thinking about the job that actually interests me. For one, the exploratory class and Rachel Gerber do an amazing job of being supportive and helpful to all students. Not knowing what you want to study can feel overwhelming and frustrating, but my biggest takeaway would be to talk to people about what interests you. This means talking to friends, family, academic coaches, professors, or anyone else. Having someone to talk to only helps get you closer to figuring out where you want to go in the end.

My second piece of advice for this topic is extremely vague but so important, but it’s that everything will work out in time. I know that as a freshman, just a few weeks ago, that seemed impossible for me, but now, looking back, this statement is so true. I’m still not even finished with my first semester of college, but my advice for incoming freshmen would be to be bold, take chances, explore, and make your college experience what you want it to be.
