5 “You Aren’t Alone!” with Reagan

What I wish I would have known coming into freshman year, I wish I knew about the Career Development Center. This is both a website and in-person office where you can learn more about the majors at IU and meet with career coaches. They have many resources to aid you in understanding your skills, passions, and interests and really help guide deciding what to major in.

Best Advice for Making Friends? Be patient with making friends because it will most likely take more time than usual. But trust that those supporting friendships will emerge! One way I found friends is by getting involved in two Christian Ministries, Salt company and Christian Student Fellowship. If that isn’t your thing, then join a club, there are so many! And get to know the people living on your floor. Host a game night or invite the person living next to you to go to dinner.

My favorite spot on campus is the wooden room outside the IMU Starbucks. It is so cozy and feels like I’m in Gilmore Girls or Harry Potter. This spot is so fun to study at with friends plus drink a delicious drink!

Not Sure What to Major in? Here’s my perspective coming into freshman year–I was overwhelmed by all the options it numbed me! I was so worried about making the wrong choice. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are interested in what you are studying and are slightly passionate about it, go for it! Your major does not have to directly align with your career all the time. If you have a degree in something that you are passionate about, you will be successful later on in life. It shows potential employers that you have the determination to complete hard things and you’ll grow so much along the way.

Final Words of Cheer–transitioning to college can feel like a lot at first, and that’s ok! Welcome in all the emotions with grace but don’t let them consume you. You belong here and you will learn how to navigate things. And you don’t have to do it alone! There are so many people who want to hear what you are going through and how you are feeling, your RA, close professors, counselors and CAPS, your academic advisor, and many more. You are here to learn academically and grow into a better person overall. Find ways to have fun, dance, sing, paint, be creative, join a rec sports team. Be gracious to yourself as you learn new things and take on this new adventure!
