AMPATH Kenya:

  • Dell Med Students/Residents/Faculty in Kenya
    • In mid-July, 2023 Info sessions for interested students were held virtually for three days
    • Planning for next year, so far:
      • 4 students – spots confirmed, applications open August 1, 2023
      • 2 peds residents – spots and names confirmed, applications open August 1, 2023
      • 1 family medicine resident

  • Moi Students in Austin
  • July 18, 2023 Tim and Becca presented elective for Moi students in Austin to the Healthcare Delivery Committee
  • 5 students are for 4 Ambassador spots (to help host Moi Students)

 

ADMINISTRATIVE:

  • We continue to collaborate with Debbie Ungar at IU to update AMPATH/MAPAS México website so that it can serve as public platform to share / access SOPs and an online Visitor form, among other new features / content.
  • June 27, 2023: We held our third BUAP-UT Executive Committee monthly meeting and discussed Administrative topics (e.g., the new Mexico Coordinator hiring, the Evaluation Working Group Research Assistant hiring, the MOU between BUAP and the Secretaria de Salud), Research project status for Working Groups and AMBIA funding and Puentes 2023, Care (e.g., Astellas cancer prevention, CHEER Ecostove, pasantes program update, jornada rescheduling in early September), and Education (GVE migrant health course, global health diploma, international exchange, AMBIA education focus working group status, FILUNI). This monthly meeting allows BUAP and UT leaders to focus on collaborate strategic guidance and decision-making.
  • Mexico Project Coordinator: we identified a top candidate for this part-time contract role based in Mexico who will provide essential administrative support for on-the-ground initiatives and Becca’s work and now are navigating BUAP and UT hiring policies to make an offer.
  • June 20, 2023 The BUAP Facultad de Medicina Dean presented a report within BUAP about their medical school, including updates on AMPATH/MAPAS México. The BUAP President attended. EDUCATION:

  • Monthly seminars:
  • Migrant Health Global Virtual Exchange:
    • o Our Clinical Team Lead and Dra. Marta Elba at BUAP to continue to try to have this formally registered as a course in the fall 2023 at BUAP and UT.
  • Global Health Grand Rounds: lining up Dr. Shanti Nulu, cardiologist and assistant professor of internal medicine at Dell Med (October 2, 2023) and Liberty Wickman, CTO at Partners in Health Peru (February 2024).

 

RESEARCH:

  • RIAT & SOPs: We completed the RIAT and continue to complete the relevant SOPs.
  • Working Groups: Our team continues to support the six existing and two new Working Groups to meet and plan their community projects, and plan for in-person time at Puentes 2023.
    • Mental Health Bienestar: Dr. Ricardo Ainslie and Dr. Becca Cook met with the UT experts to help discuss/plan logistics for their research project, and Becca will schedule a meeting with them and FCP.
  • Puentes October 23 and 24, 2023: We continue to plan for this collaborative research summit.

 

CARE:

  • Astellas Access To Care Initiative: AMPATH/MAPAS Mexico community-based model in Cancer education, prevention and early detection: we have been working internally at UT and Dell Med on administrative infrastructure for this award and plan to launch project activities in the fall 2023
  • Community Health and Primary Care Activities:
    • June: Health outreach to the primary school in San Francsico Xochiteopan, conducted nutritional evaluation and health education for 121 children.
    • We completed our AMPATH/MAPAS global health classes for the Spring semester held a “graduation party” for those completing their social service year June 29, 2023. BUAP FacMed blog: https://facmed.buap.mx/blog/entrega-de-reconocimientos-a-pasantes-de-la-licenciatura-en-medicina-por-participar-en-jornadas-de-salud-ampath/  As part of our program evaluation, we conducted an anonymous survey with pasantes who worked with AMPATH/MAPAS: 90% response rate from graduating pasantes with overall satisfaction score of 9.57 (out of 10). Provided tangible, feasible suggestions for activities/material/knowledge checks/responsibilities and also how instructors can create an enabling learning environment. We provided orientation on AMPATH/MAPAS México for incoming pasantes and expect having new pasantes with 100% time dedicated to AMPATH/MAPAS in August 2023.
