AMPATH Kenya:
- Dell Med to Kenya:
- o Rob Neely and surgery team were in Kenya in late May/early June.
- o Processes and materials for Dell Med students in Kenya are now being updated to reflect the team’s changes/steps after latest cancelation.
- Dell Med Global Health Ambassadors: July 1 deadline. Three are interested.
- Moi to Dell Med:
- One of the incoming Kenyan students was denied their B1 visa, so we’re working with Dell Med and Texas Global to pursue a J1 visa for him.
AMPATH/MAPAS México Priorities:
- Evaluate, define, and care for chronic NCDs that Mexico and Texas share
- o Astellas: May 30 and 31, 2024: Conducted workshops with promotoras on diabetes and NCD screening and conducted post-training retention test on breast and cervical cancer training. Offered diabetes screening (POC glucose and A1C with those with abnormal glucose), diabetes knowledge assessment, and metabolic assessment simultaneously offered by DM working group.
- o Exploring partnership between Direct Relief Mexico and Hospital Universitario BUAP: Facilitated meeting, resolved most of the technical/pharmacy related questions, and explored next steps. Some administrative and legal questions need to be reviewed/resolved with others at BUAP.
- o Held monthly Diabetes Task Force call
- Provide care and follow-up to the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the state of Puebla
- o AMBIA-funded Working Groups project implementation: AMPATH/MAPAS México Clinical Team Lead & Project Coordinator supporting:
- Education: soft skills workshop for ~40 rising pasantes July 8-10
- Nutrition: coordinating for school garden build in Sept 2024
- Diabetes: supporting recruitment mechanisms, visits to the community, and local feedback on questionnaire
- Participate meaningfully in addressing the social determinants of health and translate health promotion and healthcare provision to the community
- o CHEER: continue home visits with health screening, air quality assessments, and in-depth interviews to explore impact of cooking methods on women’s health and the implementation realities of recent eco-stove installation in one of our target communities.
- Build capacity in public health and healthcare delivery
- o Resident Spanish Language program: Six pediatric residents and three psychiatry residents have been selected and scheduled to be in Puebla for the next academic year.
- o Global Virtual Exchange/Migrant Health elective: Elba and Dra. Cook are holding an event with the BUAP students and pasantes who participated in this elective to provide certificates of participation.
- o BUAP/INSP joint MD/MPH Program: AMPATH/MAPAS México Clinical Team Lead participated in a meeting between leadership of BUAP FacMed and INSP School of Public Health to advance next steps in designing the program. The Clinical Team Lead then reviewed INSP’s MPH curriculum to map it with the current BUAP medical student curriculum and provided a written analysis for BUAP colleagues to consider in their curriculum reform and redesign.
- o 3rdyear DMS social entrepreneurship distinction project with AMPATH/MAPAS México: Clinical Team Lead met with two of them and sent summary email to relevant DMS GH Division members.
- o Connected BUAP Emergency Medicine providers to UVA EM team facilitating Spanish Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds.
- Train and research to elevate the primary care system and public health for the benefit
- SOPs: We continue to complete the relevant SOPs.
- Working Groups: Continue to support the eight Working Groups to meet and plan projects.
- Held initial DCyTIC/TACC/AMPATH call to explore colaboration opportunities in health informatics
- The AMPATH/MAPAS México program has 2 abstracts related to the Ecostove Project accepted in the First International Congress of Environmental Epi Health in Mexico being held at BUAP in late May: https://enviroepihealth.com/. AMPATH/MAPAS México pasantes co-authored and presented 2 posters. Potential opportunities to form collaboration with CHEER and others doing research in epigenetics and the exposome over time (EPIGEN https://epigen.concytep.gob.mx/es/, CONACYTEP funding, Institute of Sciences at BUAP).
