Monthly AMPATH Report – AMPATH/MAPAS México

AMPATH Kenya:

  • Moi Students in Austin: Glory and Mobisa will deliver final presentations in class this week and conclude clinical rotations before their return to Eldoret on Sunday.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE:

  • After several months of creating and revising new content, the AMPATH/MAPAS México website is live. We still have additional content to add (SOPs) and the new MX Coordinator, will revise the Spanish version. https://www.ampathmexico.org/
  • BUAP-UT Executive Committee monthly meeting: BUAP and UT leaders continue to meet monthly to focus on collaborate strategic guidance and decision-making.
  • AMPATH/MAPAS Mexico Project Coordinator: We have hired and are onboarding a new Mexico-based project coordinator to support administation and operations across the 3 pillars of the project in Puebla Title VI Funding: approved for $5000 this year (up from $2500 last year) for international faculty travel.
  • People Magazine interviewed Bill Tierney about influenza and global health issues. We will include more info when it is available.

 

EDUCATION:

  • Monthly seminars:
    • o August 24, 2023, 6-7:30pm CT seminar. Vianet Nava Navarro, PhD of BUAP and Dra. Jessica Calderón-Mora, DrPH of UT Austin focused on cervical cancer screening and 118 people attended. Click here to view the recording.
    • o September 21, 2023 6-7:30pm CT seminar: Edith Alvarez Melchor of BUAP and Maestro Bulmaro Gonzalez of Universidad Intercultural Indigena de Michoacan (UIIM) will focus on the use of traditional medicines community traditions and how they relate to medical care in marginalized communities in Puebla, Mexico and Central Texas, USA.   • September 15, 2023: Dr. Tim Ruttan and pediatric fellows shared highlights about pediatrics engagement at AMPATH Kenya and Mexico during the pediatrics grand round titled, “Global Health and Pediatrics at Dell Medical School: Current projects and future directions.”
  • Global health team had 2 posters accepted at Dell Medical School Annual Medical Education Innovations, Research and Awards Summit:
  • “Decolonizing global health learning: early AMPATH/MAPAS México experiences and lessons in designing a reciprocal exchange program for medical students” designed by Alexander Chu (medical student) Sarayu Adenia, Dr. Becca Cook, Dr Tim MercerExploring Two Sides of Migrant Health: Evaluating the Impact of a Global Virtual Exchange Course for Medical Students.
