Check Your Examination Room Each Day

Your exam room is your practice location.  Treat it as such.  Prior to your first examination, review how it appears, specifically looking for the following

  • Is the slit lamp in good working condition and the platform clean?  If not, please take the time to clean it.
  • Is the chair/stand/stand light clean and in good repair.  If not, please ask us to remedy the situation.
  • Is your phoroptor clean and in good working condition?

Stock Your Examination Room Each Day

Ensure that your room has the following supplies before you start each day

  • Fluress (1 bottle) – replace if expired
  • Tropicamide 1% (1 bottle) – replace if expired
  • Phenylephrine 2.5% (1 bottle) – replace if expired
  • Proparacaine 0.5% (1 bottle) – replace if expired
  • Fluorescein strips (10) – replace if expired
  • Lissamine green strips (10) – replace if expired
  • Schirmer tear strips or phenol red threads (10) – replace if expired
  • Alcohol pads (1 box) – replace if expired
  • Sterile applicators (1 box) – replace if expired
  • Tissues
  • KimWipes
  • Alcohol hand-sanitizer

Know the Location of the Following Items within the Clinic

Make sure that you can locate the following items within the clinic.  You are responsible for knowing where they can be found.

    • Location of trial contact lenses
    • Location of sample contact lens solutions
    • Locations of sample eye drops (diagnostic and therapeutic drops)
    • Location of supplies
    • Location of forms (conference room, front desk, filing cabinet behind front desk)
    • Location of first aid/AED (first floor, behind the front desk)
    • Location of visual field testing machines (threshold and screening)
    • Location of OCTs
    • Location of pachymeters (most pachymetry is performed using anterior segment OCT or the Pentacam in our clinics, but we still have handheld ultra-sound pachymeters)
    • Brightness acuity test locations
    • Sharps container locations
    • Infectious/biological waste container locations
