Responsibilities of the Equity Committee

The following suggested responsibilities have been identified by the Education for Liberation team as essential charges to create a strong and valuable Equity Committee at your school. Please remember that these responsibilities should be balanced with the privileges of participating in equity work. From earlier in this toolkit:

In addition to the four major responsibilities below, the Committee should also serve as a space to kindle connection, joy, and exploration: there is an inherent joy that comes from exploring one’s identity and raising the consciousness of one’s community. To achieve this, we recommend that the committee consider how self care can be a component of each meeting and of the committee’s work more generally. This could take the form of book and film clubs, special experiential learning opportunities, or the sharing of community and culture through off-site events.

Responsibility #1:  Create and/ or review policy and procedures related to equity.

Responsibility #2:  Identify priority equity gaps and strategies.

Responsibility #3:  Respond to crises  and be proactive in addressing cultural tensions.

Responsibility #4:  Develop diversity-related programming.
