30 Myth and Memory in Magiritsa: How a Writer Finds Herself in a Bowl of Greek Easter Soup – Mathea Tanner

Mathea Tanner is an alumna of the Indiana University East undergraduate program with a major in Business and a minor in Creative Writing. She is currently pursuing IUE’s certificate in technical and professional writing. Mathea grew up in Chicago, Illinois and currently resides in Denver, Colorado.  This was the final paper she wrote for Technical Report Writing W-234 in the fall semester of 2022.  Mathea wrote this research article in the fall of 2022 for Dr. Evans’ Technical Report Writing W234. The objective was to produce an article worthy of Saveur magazine and in promotion of a greater body of work she is producing on the subject of food and family. The content was informed by her own personal history, as well as her research on both Greek cuisine and the history of the recipe.

This was Mathea’s first attempt at writing with a magazine in mind. Saveur is a food and lifestyle magazine she greatly admires, and she learned so much in creating this piece. She spent time understanding how to maintain her voice while adapting material for the specific style of a publisher. Mathea also worked on incorporating research in a way that feels seamless and natural. The final piece is something she is proud to share with you, as it represents her culture, family, and the food she loves.  Professor Margaret Thomas Evans would like to celebrate this piece and said, “Your article told such a wonderful story. I was enthralled when reading it. The photos enhanced the story. I was glad you were able to include the photo of you and your mother cooking. Superb!”
