Motivation by Kari Spurgeon
This chapter contains the Motivation section presented by Kari Spurgeon.
Choosing growth will always come with risk – we might risk looking silly learning to roller skate, or risk not getting the hang of a new job right away. We have to learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable.
Have you ever used perfectionism as a shield against discomfort or disappointment?
Hiding behind perfectionism can look like:
- intentionally giving less than your best so that your best effort does not become vulnerable to critique
- avoiding putting effort into new things because you are afraid you won’t be good at them
Committing to growth mindset makes us vulnerable, and we have to make a choice to step bravely into the world. If we have a growth mindset, we’ll acknowledge when we make mistakes. Acknowledging our mistakes lets us learn from them and improve.
