Taking Care of the Basics

International Students (Orientation and Testing)

As an international student, your first point of contact should be the Office of International Affairs (OIA). They’re your go-to resource for questions about visas and employment requirements, and orientation. Be sure to review your admission materials carefully and participate in OIA’s Orientation program.

Reach out to the and/or your program with any questions or concerns. You must review your admission materials carefully engage in and become familiar with

Testing for International Students

English proficiency is crucial for your academic success. While requirements vary by program, most non-native English speakers need to take additional tests to demonstrate English proficiency and meet graduate or professional admission requirements.

English proficiency can be demonstrated in many ways. Be sure to verify English proficiency requirements with your program of interest before registering for a specific exam or program.

Common tests include:

  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

This test helps determine the most beneficial English courses for your needs. Don’t worry about preparing – it’s designed to assess your current skills accurately. The EAP courses assigned based on your test results are mandatory and essential for your academic journey. They’re tailored to enhance your English skills, setting you up for success at IU Indianapolis (IU Indy) and beyond. Remember, completing these requirements is necessary for graduation.

The Department of English provides detailed information about test dates, locations, and registration instructions. They also offer an ESL Tutoring Center for additional support. For questions about dates and times for the current semester, please email esltutor@iu.edu.

  • Program for Intensive English (PIE)

The Program for Intensive English (PIE) at IU Indy offers language courses to help non-native English speakers meet the university’s minimum English proficiency requirement by completing Level 7. However, check with your specific academic program, as they may have additional English language standards beyond the general IU Indy requirement.

  • SPEAK Exam

For those considering teaching roles, like tutoring or being a lab assistant, you’ll also need to take the SPEAK exam. This ensures you’re well-equipped to communicate effectively in an academic setting.
