55 Medical Imaging Technology Mission, Values, Goals and Outcomes

The Medical Imaging Technology (MIT) Program is part of the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Programs (RISP), which is housed in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences of the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSOM), in the Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis campus (IUPUI). The Bachelor of Science Degree in MIT offered by Indiana University School of Medicine at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis is designed to prepare competent entry-level technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for advanced medical imaging concentrations.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) MIT Program is to advance health in the state of Indiana and beyond by providing quality education for its students and promoting excellence in the art and science of advanced medical imaging. Guided by the Vision and Principles of IUSM, the Program strives to provide academic and clinical experiences that produce competent and compassionate professionals with a commitment to the performance of quality imaging and the pursuit of lifelong learning.

Values

The Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Programs (RISP) faculty support the following values:

  • Student learning through the effective use of available educational opportunities including:
    • Entry-level professional programs, advanced level educational programs, and continuing education offerings.
    • Diverse patient populations
    • Cultural competence
    • Broad spectrum of technology and health facilities.
  • Creative activity and research resulting from the collaboration of faculty and students.
  • Ethical behavior and professional integrity in addition to technical competence.
  • Civic engagement involved in collaborating with a variety of internal and external constituencies including health care facilities, professional organizations and IUPUI, School of Medicine and Health Professions Program departments.

Goals for the MIT Program

  • Graduates will be clinically competent
  • Graduates will demonstrate effective communication skills
  • Graduates will think critically and apply problem solving skills in a scanning environment
  • Graduates will demonstrate professional values
  • Graduates will have the knowledge of professional development opportunities
  • To prepare competent imaging professionals in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for advanced medical imaging concentrations.

Outcomes for the MIT Program

At appropriate points during the MIT Program, the student will be able to:

  • effectively perform advanced diagnostic imaging procedures. (Psychomotor)
  • demonstrate appropriate knowledge of advanced diagnostic imaging procedures. (Cognitive)
  • use effective oral communication skills with patients and clinical staff. (Affective)
  • demonstrate effective written communication skills (Cognitive)
  • think critically, and problem solve imaging strategies to obtain high quality images. (Psychomotor)
  • evaluate images for differential diagnoses. (Cognitive)
  • demonstrate appropriate professional values in the clinical setting. (Affective)
  • demonstrate an understanding of ethical obligations as described in the ARRT and ASRT Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice. (Cognitive)
  • demonstrate knowledge of professional development resources. (Cognitive)
  • successfully complete the MIT Program. (Affective)
  • express confidence in the overall quality of skills learned while in the MIT Program. (Affective)

Program Effectiveness Data (PED)

  • At least 80% of graduates will pass an ARRT concentration examination within 12 months post-graduation.
  • At least 75% of graduates will be gainfully employed within 6 months post-graduation, if pursuing employment.
  • At least 70% of admitted students will complete the program within 24 months.
  • Graduates will be satisfied with their education.
  • Employers will be satisfied with the overall quality of the program’s graduate as an advanced medical imaging professional.
