88 NMT Clinical Additional Attendance Policies
ADDITIONAL ATTENDANCE POLICIES
Absence Due to Required Course Attendance
Students who are absent from clinical assignments because they are repeating a required course that is offered only at a time when they are to be in clinic, will be provided with an alternative clinical assignment schedule. The schedule must be in the same clinical area and for the same aggregate period as the time missed. Double shifts, extended weekend assignments, and lunch hours may not be used as make-up time. The NMT Program Director will consult with the student in preparing the alternate schedule.
Alternate clinical schedules cannot be arranged for non-required courses. Students working on entrance requirements for another degree program must take that into account when determining their schedule for each academic session
Funeral Leave
A student is granted up to three clinic (3) funeral days for the death of a parent, sibling, spouse, child, grandparent or equivalent in law. A student is granted two clinic (2) funeral day for the death of an aunt, uncle, and other relative or equivalent in law, or close friend. These absences are NOT counted as personal days. Request for additional time off can be made based on extenuating circumstances. This additional time off will require the student to use their personal days or may require that the student take an incomplete in the clinical course.
The student must contact the program director or RISP clinical instructor by email to request funeral leave. The absence must be prescheduled and reported to the program director or RISP clinical instructor before the specified time for that clinical assignment. Funeral leave will not be granted without pre-scheduling. When requesting funeral leave, the student must give the name of the deceased, relationship to the student, and the date and location of the funeral. Documentation of attendance at the funeral is required (usually a showing or prayer card). Documentation must be given to the program director or RISP clinical instructor within two (2) weeks of the funeral leave.
Jury Duty
The RISP program believes in fulfilling the obligation of jury duty and will support students who are called to serve. Upon receiving a summons for jury duty, the student must notify the program director via email of the days of obligation. Students are required to record the absence following the policy for reporting clinical absences. Jury duty does not count against personal time. In most cases, jury duty lasts one week or less. Students are given up to three (3) days to fulfill their civic obligation. If more time is needed, the circumstances will be reviewed on an individual basis. Students must document the required jury duty by presenting a letter from the court to the RISP clinical instructor documenting the dates of their service upon returning to school.
Military Leave
IU recognizes that students who serve in the U.S. armed forces may encounter situations in which military obligations force them to take extended time off due to drill, training camps, deployment, or other instances. Each situation will be unique and will likely include extenuating circumstances. Students involved in the National Guard Reserves, or any branch of the military must request a meeting with the program Director in the summer of their first year in the program. Discussion can take place on possible occurrences while in the program. A plan of action and a detailed calendar of excused time off to fulfill the military obligations must be created and provided to all program faculty, as needed, for any student that provides his/ her military orders.
Professional Educational Leave
Students may request release time from clinical assignments to attend the following activities: the Central Chapter Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (CCSNMMI) annual meeting, fall meeting, or road shows, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meeting, or the IUPUI Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) symposium, the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) annual or midwinter meeting. Students must provide verification of attendance. These absences are NOT counted as personal days.
Extra credit will NOT be given for attendance at meetings in which clinic release time has been given unless approved by the Program Director or RISP clinical instructor.
For students on probation to participate in activities that take them away from the clinical setting, a letter of petition must be submitted to the Program Director AND the RISP clinical instructor ten (10) days prior to the event. The faculty will grant or deny the request within five days of submission.
Employment of Related Work
Students employed by the Radiology Departments of any of the clinical affiliates of the Indiana University Radiologic and Imaging Science Programs shall not engage in that employment during scheduled clinical experience. The official policy of the Department of Radiologic and Imaging Sciences states that “Students employed by any of the Radiology and Imaging Sciences Departments on the Indiana University Medical Center campus may NOT engage in that employment during scheduled clinical experience”. Likewise, related work performed by the student as a hospital employee may not be substituted for educational clinical experience”. Students cannot earn required or elective clinical procedures while being paid as an employee.
Part Time Employment
The Career and Employment Services Office provides information regarding part time employment opportunities for students. Part time employment listings are posted on job bulletin boards located throughout the University. Students interested in part time employment should see the Office of Student Employment which is located in the Business/SPEA Building across Michigan St., Room 2010 at 274-0857.
It is recommended that students avoid part time employment. However, the program does recognize the occasional necessity for it. Students, who must work, may not arrive late or leave early from program clinic assignments or classes because of their work schedule. They should make arrangements at their jobs around class and clinical assignments. It is recommended that students not exceed 20 clock hours per week on a job. When outside work is judged to be interfering with Program responsibilities, this may be entered as part of the student’s record. Such information may have bearing on subsequent necessary probationary actions, etc.
