Section 5 – Approaches and Interventions

Three individuals looking at a poster display for Indy Toxic Heritage exhibition
Visitors read the introductory panel of “Indy Toxic Heritage: Pollution, Place, and Power” at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center, Indianapolis, IN, June 2024.

This section explores how individuals, organizations, and industries respond to the creation and consequences of toxicity with a focus on action. The activities explore how people have deployed heritage strategies, often with an emphasis on remediation, amelioration of harm, education and raising awareness. It also invites creative ideas about how the strategies and tools of heritage making, including exhibitions, art interventions, toxic tours, museum activism, and citizen science projects, might be used to create a more sustainable and environmentally just future.
