There are a lot of big brains on the Bloomington campus. The biggest by far, weighing in at 10,000 pounds and standing 7 feet high, resides just in front of the Psychology building.1 The Human Brain, sculpted by Bloomington artist Amy Brier and carved by Michael Donham, isn’t just the biggest brain on campus, though– it’s the largest anatomically accurate brain sculpture in the world!2

Watching the brain come alive

Commissioned for the 125th anniversary of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in 2013, The Human Brain is an impressive sight during the day. But thanks to the addition of a lighting design by Rob Shakespeare in 2015, visiting the brain at night takes the experience to a whole new level. Shakespeare’s lighting design, entitled Consciousness, reacts to the movement of people passing by with a flurry of activity, as seen in the video below:
