11 The Future is Now: Amatria

On April 11, 2018, Amatria was “born” in Indiana University’s Luddy Hall. “She” is an innovative experimental test bed for sentient architecture, designed to answer the question, “what if buildings could know us, talk to us and even care about us?”.1 Amatria was created by the Living Architecture Systems group, led by architect Philip Beesley, and is meant to emulate an organic, forest-like landscape.2 The sculpture hovers delicately inside the upper floor of Luddy Hall, using light and motion sensors to gather information about “her” environment and respond to those who move through it with subtle movements, sounds, and shifting colors.
