FIRST YEAR-Explore More Possibilities: INDUSTRY RESEARCH

Your career coach can help you build experience and help you learn more about the career field. You can learn how to talk with professionals in the career field of interest to you.
In particular, your coach can help you do industry research by:
1. Developing strategies and resources for researching specific jobs and careers

- They are able to show you websites to learn more about industries and roles. One helpful website is called, Onetonline.org, developed by the U.S. Department of Labor categorizes and lists thousands of career titles and information to learn more about the job roles, skills needed, and current salary information.
- Another helpful website is called, What Can I Do With This Major?, created by the University of Tennessee. It features100 top college majors with information on common career paths, types of employers that hire in the field, and strategies to maximize opportunities, along with links to professional associations, occupational outlook information, and job search resources.
- They are able to show you websites to learn more about industries and roles. 2. Learn how to do an informational interview!

- An informational interview is a conversation with a professional who is doing a job (or who works in a company) that you want to learn more about. The informational interview can be on Zoom or over the phone or in person.
- Informational interviews can help you research careers & learn more about particular industries/companies. Your career coach will guide you to consider what questions to ask during an informational interview and even role play an informational interview with you so you can practice and feel confident about this experience.
3. If you are interested in health, medicine, or law as a career path, meet with an advisor in the Health Professions and Pre – Law Advising who will be able to share more information with you about pathways in this graduate level programs.
