Year 1, EXPLORE: explore possibilities with your career coach, identify interests, skillsets, values for best major/career pathways. Do industry research with your career coach. Learn about the world of work and opportunities for employment. Do an informational interview with a professional. Start to develop professional skills with your career coach like writing a resume, and learn how to conduct an informational interview. Year 2 CONNECT: Get involved. Join a club or organization to develop leadership experience. Build experience by applying for a part-time job or research position. Conduct informational interviews in interested career role or company. Job shadow in your preferred industry. Observe a career or internship fair on campus. Continue to develop your professional skills. Review your resume, learn how to write a cover letter. Learn how to write a thank you note. Practice interview skills. Year 3 EXPERIENCE: In the fall semester discuss internship search strategies and consider micro-internships or virtual work simulations with your coach. End of fall semester/beginning of Spring apply for summer internships. Build connections through informational interviews. Create a LinkedIn profile. Attend career and internship fairs on campus. Attend career center events and talk with industry professionals. Continue to be involved in student clubs/organizations with increased responsibility. Continue to develop professional skills including--a resume and cover letter review by a career coach. Send thank you notes after every career connection. Create a reference list to have when asked for references after a job interview. Develop a portfolio (if applicable for your industry). Do industry research by researching careers and specific companies for future work. Create a job search strategy with your career coach for future employment. Year 4 FIND YOUR NEXT STEPS. Continue with everything described so far and make sure to develop a professional wardrobe, practice interview skills with career coach, and learn about salary negotiation as you engage your job search strategy for full-time employment after graduation. YEAR 5 POST-GRAD: Once a Hoosier, always a Hoosier! Utilize networking with the IU Alumni Association including career services.
