Trimming and Splicing Video
WHY THIS APPROACH WORKS
A major strength of PlayPosit is its ability to easily splice multiple videos together into a single bulb, giving the appearance of continuous video. What’s more, each video segment can be individually trimmed and ordered, even across video platforms (i.e., you can combine YouTube and Kaltura videos). Our team has tested splicing 20 video clips together without noticeable lagging between videos.
Step 1: Add the Beginning Clip
- Create a new bulb in PlayPosit.
- Select a video source (e.g., Kaltura or YouTube), and click on the video or video segment that you want to occur first.
- (optional) To adjust when this video segment starts or ends, click the CUSTOMIZE button and Trim & Crop . Click Advanced then click the time code(s) under the “Start time” or “End time” columns to enter new times as needed.
Note: Alternatively you can change the Start- and End times by clicking and dragging the green (Start) or red (Stop) pins located on the timeline below the video player. - Click the DONE button.
STEP 2: Add the next clip(s)…
- Click ADD VIDEO and select the next segment of the video.
- (optional) Click the CUSTOMIZE button and use Trim & Crop if the video needs to be cropped.
- Click the DONE button. In the preview timeline below the VIDEO SEGMENTS window, you should now see that the continuous video is playing all of the clips you have added, in the order you added them.
- (optional) Repeat the steps above to add more video segments in the order you wish them to appear.
Step 3: Saving your bulb
- (optional) Add interactions throughout the video based on your learning outcomes.
- Click REVIEW at the top-right of the INTERACTIONS screen once you have finished adding interactions.
- (optional) Click PREVIEW to see your bulb from the student view.
- Click SAVE AND EXIT.
Replacing or inserting a section of video
WHY THIS APPROACH WORKS
New editions of textbooks or changes in laws, for example, may make it necessary to update and replace a small section of an otherwise relevant video. By leveraging PlayPosit’s superb splicing abilities, you can overcome its limited editing functionality (which is really just chopping) with trimming and splicing together three or more sections of videos: (1) the section of the video before the cut; (2) the replacement video segment; and (3) the section of the video after the cut. It’s easier than it sounds.
Step 1 – Adding the original video’s first segment
- Create a new bulb in PlayPosit.
- Select a video source (e.g., Kaltura or YouTube), and click on your original video that needs editing.
- Click the CUSTOMIZE button, and click Trim & Crop.
- Click Advanced then click the time code under the “End time” column to enter the time for the moment right before you want your replacement video segment to go.
Note: Alternatively you can change the end time by clicking and draging the red pin located on the timeline below the video player. - Click the DONE button.
Step 2: Adding the replacement video segment
- Click ADD VIDEO.
- In the Video Source screen, click on the replacement video segment
- (optional) Click CUSTOMIZE then Trim & Crop to modify the Start- or End times of that video as needed.
- Click the DONE button.
Step 3: Adding the original video’s ending segment
- Click ADD VIDEO.
- In the Video Source screen, click on your original video (the same that you added in Step 1, above).
- Click CUSTOMIZE then Trim & Crop.
- Click Advanced then click the time code under the “Start time” column to enter the time for the moment right after the part in your video you’re replacing.
Note: Alternatively you can change the start time by clicking and dragging the green pin located on the timeline below the video player. - Click the DONE button.
Step 4: Saving your bulb
- (optional) Add interactions throughout the video based on your learning outcomes.
- Click REVIEW at the top-right of the Interactions screen once you have finished adding interactions.
- (optional) Click PREVIEW to see your bulb from the student view.
- Click SAVE AND EXIT.
