47 RISP Clinical Probation

Probationary actions are recommended to the Program Director by a faculty member or may be activated by the student’s academic or clinical performance. When probationary actions occur, the student will be counseled and notified of the action, the length of probation, and the action(s) necessary to be removed from probation.  Failure to comply with the remedial actions outlined in that notification will result in the dismissal of the student from the program.

Examples of situations in which student may be placed on clinical probation include, but are not limited to:

• Failure to perform at a minimum technical competency level as identified in the course syllabus
• Unexcused or excessive clinical absences
• Excessive tardiness in clinic
• Excessive pattern of poor behavior
• Failure to follow RISP Clinical Policies & Procedures
• HIPAA violations
• Inappropriate use of radiation
• Poor interpersonal skills, including breaches of civility toward others, and language barriers
• Lack of professionalism
• Academic misconduct
• Clinical practice performed without appropriate supervision

Students on clinical probation are prohibited from participating in any professional development activities that take them away from the clinical setting (i.e. RNSA trip, conferences, etc.) unless they have submitted a letter of petition to the Clinical Coordinator ten days prior to the event.  This petition must be reviewed by the faculty and subsequently, the faculty will grant or deny the request within five days of submission.

Letter of Petition Guidelines

• Must clearly and thoroughly explain the reason for the request as well as the activity in which you wish to participate
• Must include a brief summary explaining why the student feels it is important to attend the requested event/activity
• Should demonstrate your semester progress with clinical course requirements that proves the student will not fall behind in the semester as a result of attending the event/activity
• Must demonstrate how the inappropriate behavior has been improved

Students should remember, it is a privilege to attend all scheduled events and activities outside of clinic and class. A clear, respectful, and well throughout petition letter should be written as a way to convince the faculty why attending the event/activities should be approved considering the student has failed to follow program policies effectively in the past. The petition letter should be ½ to 1 full-page and include very detailed information, which explains the justification for approving the student’s absence from clinic.
