Student Clinical Handbook Introduction

Welcome to your clinical experience as a radiography student in the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Programs (RISP) at Indiana University at Indianapolis.

This handbook aims to identify and explain necessary policies, procedures, and expectations for the satisfactory completion of each semester’s clinical experience while enrolled in the RISP Radiography Program.

The student is responsible for familiarizing themselves with the policies and procedures within this handbook. Also, the student should know that policies submitted as written are subject to change. Policies can be amended, removed, or suspended at the program faculty’s discretion. As a result, students must complete an attestation confirming their understanding of the contents each year. 

Clinical rotations are where students apply what they have learned in the classroom and practice in the laboratory. As the student progresses throughout the program, they will perform examinations more independently. As the student approaches the end of the program, they will have gained the knowledge and ability to perform all radiographic procedures performed in a general or acute care hospital or office practice.

The following points are essential to remember:

• You will be working with a variety of people. You may not share the same values or beliefs, but you should always respect each person’s individuality.
• If you are to be successful in your clinical work, you must exhibit a professional, caring, and dedicated attitude toward the care you provide to patients and families and interactions with other healthcare personnel.
• You are a guest at the clinical affiliate sites. The clinical affiliates have the right to accept or reject a student, resulting in the student being delayed in the program or unable to complete the requirements for graduation.
• The Radiography Program at IUPUI documents students’ clinical time, evaluations, and competencies utilizing the Evalue website.
• Additionally, not every circumstance can be accounted for in the Clinical Handbook and will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

If you fail to find answers to your questions in this document, clinical faculty members or the clinical coordinator should be consulted. It is not the responsibility of the Program Director, Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Preceptor, Academic Support Specialist or any non-clinical faculty member to interpret this manual or relay information regarding clinical courses to the student.
